Be inspired by PSS & FPSS in Iowa, celebrate our “Spotlight in Iowa,” and join our community of change-makers.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness is the nation’s number one grassroots organization for individuals with mental illness & their loved ones. NAMI’s mission is to end the stigma surrounding mental illness, our local affiliate, NAMI Johnson County, does this through Education, Support, & Advocacy for individuals with mental illness & their loved ones. NAMI JC’s program, R Place Peer Recovery Center, supports NAMI’s mission by creating a stigma free community for adults with mental illness. R Place was conceptualized in 2013 by a committee of NAMI JC members, and became a functioning part of the Peer Center movement in 2014. We value a non-judgmental, empowering approach to those living with mental illness. The client/individual/member at R Place is the decision maker as much as possible. Our staff will help clients assess their options, and make referrals for services, but we will not give advice. This is not only part of a trauma informed, client centered approach to mental health support, it is vital to individuals making choices to better their own lives!
R Place provides mental health support, individual advocacy, a calendar of fun & therapeutic events offered, and socialization in a stigma free community for our clients.
R Place Peer Recovery Center is providing a welcoming community center for adults with mental illness. The way that R Place is changing the mental health landscape in Iowa by realizing that persons with mental illness function at various levels, and that diagnosis(es) do not take away one’s humanity
